Companhia de Seguros Açoreana, founded in 1892 in the Azores, was acquired by the Banif Group in 1996, as part of the acquisition of Banco Comercial dos Açores.

This meant that from being an essentially regional insurer, the company became national both in terms of business and geographic scope.

Companhia de Seguros Açoreana is currently the 7th. Insurer in terms of national market share for life and non-life insurance, and has 47 of its own branches and around 3,000 working agents, handling a total of 830,000 policies and 450,000 customers.
